The Naturopathic Physician Assistant program is to 128 quarter credit hours, (1608 clock hours). The full program is eight quarters (24 months) in length; running concurrently. It consists of classroom and Student Clinic Lab experience to equip the student with the skills to assess the needs of the patient and assist the Naturopathic Physician or other licensed physician in taking care of patients on a day-to-day basis. Core to the program is a good understanding of Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Pathology, Biology, Chemistry and Philosophy. Basic and advanced theory, techniques and cautions are covered in the classroom while the development and refining of application of procedures and abilities are developed in Student Clinic Lab.
DEFINITION & SCOPE
The Federal Dictionary of occupational Titles defines the Naturopath in section 079.101-014 as “Naturopathic Physician” and “Doctor, medical (medical service).” The federally listed scope of practice is as follows:
“Diagnoses, treats and cares for patients, using a system of practice that bases treatment on physiological functions and abnormal conditions on natural laws governing the human body: Utilizes physiological, psychological and mechanical methods, such as air, water, light, heat, earth, phototherapy, food and herb therapy, psychotherapy, electrotherapy, naturopathic corrections and manipulation, and natural methods or modalities, together with natural medicines, natural processed foods and herbs and nature’s remedies. Excludes major surgery, therapeutic use of x-ray and radium and the use of drugs, except those assimilable substances containing elements or compounds which are components of body tissues and are physiologically compatible to body processes for maintenance of life.”
The Naturopathic Physician Assistant is to assist the Naturopathic Physician or other licensed physician in the application of the above listed therapies, modalities and patient intake. The NPA may act for the Naturopathic Physician with written orders.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The program prepares the Naturopathic Physician Assistant for employment in the Naturopathic, Allopathic or Complementary health care community at the experienced level, having full confidence in their skills.
